Many visitors who come to Melaka are especially enthralled with the name Nyonya & Baba which is more commonly known as the Peranakans. In brief, though Melaka’s long history as a trading post since the 15th Century, and thus a melting pot for all cultures and people, has evolved an indigenous race known as the Nyonyas & Babas.

The Nyonyas & Babas are so called through the intermarriages of the Chinese and the Malays and from this has evolved a Peranakan culture with its own special heritage, dressing, language and most importantly its special brand of food – a fusion of both Malay and Chinese cooking which is unique and seldom found in other parts of the world!!

The Peranakan Food is very localized and is a beautiful blend of Malay and Chinese cooking with a pinch of salt here and there and a lot of tumis and rempah which secrets have been passed on from generation to generation and every single dish is personalized.

Here at the Best Cafe or Chin How Kopitiam, the management is giving you an authentic feel of what the Nyonyas & Babas eat and why their food whets the appetite of many and is relished everywhere.

The Best Cafe or Chin How Kopitiam is a small but intimate and cozy cafe catering to both locals and tourists. It is located at 23 Lorong Hang Jebat, adjacent to the famous Jonker Walk, diagonally opposite the old OCBC Bank.

We have an extensive menu ranging from Nyonya & Baba which is our main attraction whit many signature dishes, all done by a Nyonya chef with many years experience. We serve a-la-carte and the more popular set lunches and dinners. Sometimes, as your visit to Melaka is usually short, our main recommendation is. Why not try every bit of Nyonya cooking at one go? To that end, we have the set lunch & dinner which comprises of 7 dishes server to you on a dulang (tray). This includes, ayam pongteh, lemak nenas prawns, sotong belacan, cincaluk omelette, kangkung belacan, abalone vegetable soup and best of all the irresistible sambal belachan & salt fish – a local favourite for all discerning Peranakan food connoisseurs.

For those who prefer something lighter, there are always the perennial favourites Nyonya laksa, Prawn mee, our signature dish Nyonya Fried Rice and many others.

From the local scene, we also serve local fare such as mamak mee goreng, fried noodles and best of all a fusion dish of Portuguese origin “The Curry Devil” a hot and spicy curry dish without santan. It looks hot but not in taste and is acceptable to all taste buds. There is also an a-la-carte menu to choose from like Nyonya Fish Head Curry, buah keluak, fish tempera, and otak-otak. We have also a selection of vegetarian dishes including spring rolls, salads and others. For a soupy selection, try our Nyonya steam boat served with traditional soup or TomYam.

Drinks selection is plentiful from the ever popular cendol served with 100% Gula Melaka, ABC (Ice Kacang) to Beers, soft drinks and other local popular home brews Longan, Cincau, Chrysanthemum teas all brewed everyday and fresh to the taste.

Seeing is believing. Come and try us out and there will be no regrets. It will be heavy on your stomachs but definitely light on your pockets!

Be seeing you

For one of those rare musicians who have never had the benefit of formal training but relies solely on perfect pitch, memory and ear, fifty-seven year old Don Beins still continues to exemplify the adage ‘life is music, and music is life’.

Incapacitated by a stroke a few years ago that left him wheelchair bound, Don — following months of physiotherapy and rehabilitation — has come on strong and has set up his own music studio which caters for the nurturing of young talents in keyboards, drums, guitar and vocals.

Later this month in conjunction with the San Pedro celebrations at the Portuguese Settlement, Don will launch his maiden music CD.

Together with Praya Lane’s Martin Theseira and long time childhood kampung friend Raphael Zarsadias and choral backing from the Assumption Chapel Youth Choir, the group collectively known as ‘D’Malaqueiros’ (4Malaccans’, in the age-old Portuguese dialect of Cristao that is still spoken at the Portuguese Settlement), the singing troupe is expected to make waves.

According to Don, of the 14 tracks on the CD, two are his own compositions dedicated to Festa San Pedro and San Juang (Feasts of St Peter and John) that are celebrated with much tradition and enthusiasm both at the Portuguese Settlement and Praya Lane where the Assumption Chapel is sited.

Don, who undertook all the music arrangements, vocal and music playing for this debut CD, said the rest of the tracks comprise upbeat and calypso-styled versions of popular Portuguese folks songs Jinkli Nona, Bong Bong Fila. O Malhoo, Bela, 0 Maria and other evergreens.

Click here to download a track from the CD. Please right-click and “save as”.

With the help of talented guest musician Wille Fam and the production expertise of Dennis Gooting, the CD is favoured to go down extremely well with the younger members of the local and outstation Portuguese-Eurasian communities.

‘We have already had enquiries from community members residing in Australia and Singapore and based the feedback, sales of this CD should be encouraging,’ he said.
Don’s tenure in music goes back some forty years. Most comfortable on the keyboards, over the years he held regular stints and contracts playing in cabarets, nightclubs and hotel lounges all over Malaysia.

Click here if you are interested in purchasing the CD. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Till today, he performs regularly at family gatherings, private parties and wedding receptions with seasonal stints in local hotels very much in the picture.

Don recalled, ‘My first love was the piano while still in school. The church choir was where I honed my skills both as a musician and singer.

A member of a few local four-piece bands, he would readily double-up when the regular pianist failed to turn up.

‘I picked up the rudiments of music quickly gaining much advice and tips from senior musicians that I came into contact or had ‘jam sessions’ with.

I guess my natural ability and good ear for music has stood me in good stead even until today,’ he said.

Mdm. Kuah’s popiah stall which is located in Jonker Street has been operating since Jonker Street was established. Mdm. Kuah first started as an intrested based hobby as she lived nearby Jonker during that time. Not knowing long after that, her business grew and that her customers regarded her popiah as the best popiah found in Jonker as there were nice, cheap and many ingredients were put inside it. Because of this, Mdm. Kuah was motivated to turn her intrested based stall to a profit making stall today. Today, Mdm, Kuah stalls is being filled with many tourists and locals coming forth to crave for her juicy filled popiah. Mdm. Kuah also known as Janet can be contacted at JanetKuah@jonkerstreet.net
