Located at the doorway of Jonker Street, this little café has an unbelievable unique and colourful personality. Appropriately named No.1 Kopitiam ( kopitiam which translates to coffee shop in English), this café is the first shop along the street and has the characteristics of a rainbow. During the daytime it offers local café fare to tourists and locals alike, and by night joins the hustle and bustle atmosphere of the night market. This café offers a huge variety of homemade local specialty such as authentic nyonya cendol, pineapple tarts, ais kacang and various local nyonya products such as chili acar, belacan and sambal. A retired teacher, Mrs Corrine Yong, the café proprietor says her nyonya cendol is unique as it is extremely creamy and is coated with a thick palm sugar caramel. If food is not you forte, this café offers a wide collection of limited collectibles and antiques as well which would definitely appeal to a collector’s eye. Curious about the history of Jonker Street? Just ask friendly Mrs. Yong for a tour in her shop and you’ll be amaze at the things one could learn in a café.
